Medications

  • Diazepam is used to relieve anxiety, as a muscle relaxant, as a hypnotic agent, as an appetite stimulant and to control seizures. Diazepam is a benzodiazepine. This class of medicines is used to slow down the nervous system.

  • Diazoxide is used to treat certain tumors (insulinomas) in ferrets and to treat low blood sugar secondary to excessive insulin secretion in dogs.

  • Diethylstilbestrol is a synthetic non-steroidal estrogen agent. It has been used in estrogen responsive urinary incontinence and in the prevention of pregnancy after mismating in female dogs and cats. Your veterinarian may prescribe diethylstilbestrol for other conditions.

  • Difloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic with a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity. This medication has been prescribed for your pet to treat a bacterial infection. It may be prescribed to treat wounds or abscesses and urinary tract infections.

  • Digoxin is used to control the rate and rhythm of your pet's heart. It also improves the strength and efficiency with which the heart beats.

  • Diltiazem is a calcium channel blocking agent which is used to treat high blood pressure and to decrease the heart rate. Diltiazem decreases the heart's need for blood and oxygen and therefore reduces the amount of work the heart must do. It also helps the heart beat more regularly.

  • Dimenhydrinate is generally used to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by motion sickness in dogs and cats. This medication may be used for other conditions as determined by your veterinarian.

  • Diphenhydramine is an antihistamine used to prevent the symptoms of allergies. This medication may also be used for its sedative effect to calm an animal and prevent itching associated with an allergic response. This medication may be used for other conditions as determined by your veterinarian.

  • Dorzolamide is used in the eye to decrease the pressure caused by primary glaucoma. If glaucoma is diagnosed in one eye, this medication may be used in the other eye (good eye) to prevent glaucoma from developing. Dorzolamide is also used in secondary glaucoma because it has no effect on pupil size.

  • Doxepin is a tricyclic antidepressant used in dogs to treat certain skin conditions that may be caused by anxiety.
